Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to contest specific calls made by the official, echoing the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
