Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying these medications must be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like something activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
