Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical biological terror, but inside Together lies a deep examination about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
