Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several approach shafts down to the site... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who endanger our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
