The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
